Near the conclusion of the second set, Berrettini seemed to almost pass out on the court and required medical assistance, but he persevered in his struggle.

After a difficult 2023 due to injuries, the Italian just made a comeback to the tour, making it to the Challenger event final in Phoenix.

In the first game of the match, he broke Murray’s serve and dominated the first set.

However, he faltered miserably in the second and, behind 5-2, took a medical time-out after becoming lightheaded as he left the court.

Compared to previous years, when the event has often taken place in Miami, the weather this year was delightfully temperate and neither too hot nor humid.

Although the 27-year-old former world number six gave it a stronger effort in the third set, Murray looked strong and won the match in two hours and forty-seven minutes.

Murray won his fourth straight first-round match by committing only 20 unforced mistakes to 44 for Berrettini.

At the conclusion of the game, Murray scrawled, “There is life in the old dog yet,” on the television camera lens. He was happy with the way he won.

“I think I played pretty well from the middle of the first set until the end of the match,” he remarked, admitting that he got off to a sluggish start.

He struggled for a little while at the conclusion of the second and the start of the third, but I gave him a lot of chances. In the third, I took advantage of it and quickly established myself. In the end, I think I handled it nicely.

In the next round, Murray, the 2009 and 2013 Miami Open champion, will take on Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina, ranked 29th.

Stephens advances in Osaka

Four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka easily defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto of Italy at the WTA tournament, winning 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and eighteen minutes to go to the second round.

After taking a hiatus to raise her child and play for more than a year, Osaka is back where she made it to the final in 2022 before losing to Iga Swiatek. Currently, it is ranked 229th in the world.

Osaka said that her performance in Brisbane in January was the finest since she had rejoined the tour.

“To be honest, I think this is my finest match in terms of shot-making because it’s probably the most free that I was able to smash my balls and the closest to the feeling that I want to capture moving ahead.”I was swinging as well as I have since coming back,” the woman said.

In the second round, Osaka will play another mother, Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, who, after a year off the tour, has already returned to the top 20. Osaka claims that her comeback has motivated her.

“I was pregnant when I saw her play at Wimbledon, and I remember thinking that I would want to get there too someday. She’s always been a pretty good player, in my opinion, so her return to the top 20 doesn’t surprise me. She belongs there, Osaka said.

Former Grand Slam winners Sloane Stephens of the United States and Angelique Kerber met and were defeated 6-2, 6-3.

Celebrating her 31st birthday, Stephens dominated the whole match against the German, who had shown strong form at Indian Wells, where she advanced to the fourth round.

In the second round, Romania’s 19th-seeded Sorana Cirstea will take on 2018 Miami champion Stephens.
