<p>Prior to the goalkeeper’s scheduled return on Wednesday, Manuel Neuer suffered a thigh injury that severely hampered Germany’s preparations for the European Championship.</p>

<p>The German football federation reported that the captain of their team for the World Cup, who broke his leg in a skiing accident, was supposed to rejoin the squad but instead tore a muscle fiber in his left adductor during training on Wednesday morning.</p>
<p>It said that the 37-year-old Neuer would miss Germany’s next friendly against the Netherlands and France, but it provided no other details on the duration of his absence. Neuer had already departed from the team.</p>
<p>Germany’s next matches are against the Netherlands in Frankfurt on Tuesday and France in Lyon on Saturday.</p>
<p>Shortly after returning from the 2022 World Cup, Neuer fractured his leg while skiing, and he hasn’t played for Germany since. He was absent from the game for almost ten months before resuming his position as Bayern Munich’s top player.</p>
<p>In Neuer’s absence, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann is quite likely to start Marc-André ter Stegen of Barcelona as number one. There had been rumors that Nagelsmann was choosing Neuer in between the posts for Germany’s hosting of Euro 2024.</p>
<p>Just 11 days before Germany’s first Euro 2024 match against Scotland in Munich, on June 3, a friendly against Ukraine in Nuremberg will be Neuer’s first chance to play for his country if he is to unseat his challenger.</p>
<p>Greece is the opponent in Germany’s last tournament warm-up.</p>
<p>Germany faces Hungary in Stuttgart on June 19 and Switzerland in Frankfurt on June 23, after their match against Scotland on June 14.</p>
<p>Bayern, which plays Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on March 30 and Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on April 9, is also hurt by Neuer’s injury.</p>
<p>For Germany, Neuer has made 117 appearances. He was part of the team that won the World Cup in 2014, although he didn’t participate in the competition until 2010 due to a rib injury sustained by Germany’s top player at the time, René Adler.</p>
