India vs. England: Marcus Trescothick, the assistant coach for England, calls India a “hard place to come and play.”

In a challenging five-match series against India, England’s best batters have found it difficult to hit large totals; but, assistant coach Marcus Trescothick downplayed worries on Thursday.

Day one of the fifth Test in Dharamsala saw England collapse to 218 all out as Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav tore through the opposition middle and top order after the visitors chose to bat in an attempt to salvage a series victory.

Zak Crawley opened the proceedings with a score of 79, but England collapsed from 175-3, losing Jonny Bairstow (29), Joe Root (26), and captain Ben Stokes (out for a duck), all without the score changing.

During the trip, Bairstow’s greatest score was 38 in nine innings, with the middle-order batsman only scoring 199 runs.

In the last game, Root overcame a bad run with a century, while Stokes hasn’t been able to turn beginnings into larger totals.

Trescothick told reporters, “I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily scars emerging, I think they’ve been tested, and you know you always will be in this environment.”

“It’s a challenging environment to play in; the results demonstrate that it’s never easy,” he said.

“A lot of the players will consider their performance and past achievements as a basis to improve, and perhaps the next time they play, they’ll be better than they are now.”

“Lack of Form, Self-Assuredness”
England won the first Test match but lost the following three, with their batting often falling short, drawing criticism for their aggressive “Bazball” style of play.

Despite having scored 407 runs, Crawley is significantly behind series leader Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has amassed 712 runs for India, including two double hundreds. Jaiswal is now leading the series.

When players fail to score runs, what causes it? It’s a lack of confidence and form,” Trescothick said.

“That’s the reality; individuals experience periods in which they fail to score the desired number of runs,” he said.

“It’s not technical; it can be confidence, mental, or any of these things.”

Ollie Pope made a match-winning 196 in Hyderabad to open the series, but after scoring two ducks in the last defeat, he has not been able to sustain his form.

After trying to counter Yadav’s spin and being stumped, he was out for eleven in the morning session.
