<p>With immediate effect, it said, “Import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and ultra-small form factor computers, servers…is ‘Restricted’.” The DGFT, a division of the ministry of trade and industry, manages the nation’s imports and exports.</p>
<p>Products subject to limitations need a government license or authorization.</p>
<p>Exclusivity of Imports For the import of 1 laptop, tablet, all-in-one computer, or ultra-small form factor computer through mail or courier, including those bought via online shopping portals, licensing requirements are specified. The notice states that imports “will be subject to payment of duty as applicable.</p>
<p>Additionally, it said that devices like as laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs, and ultra tiny form factor computers and servers that are a necessary component of capital goods are excluded from the import licensing requirements.</p>
<p>A license for restricted imports is not necessary for the repair and return of products that have been fixed overseas, according to the DGFT.</p>
<p>“The restriction on imports of prescribed IT hardware products should help provide a big boost to the Make in India campaign in this sector,” said Abhishek Jain, partner and national head (indirect tax) at KPMG. Domestic production of these IT hardware products could see a large increase now that PLI has also been declared for this industry.</p>
