Jeep India is getting ready to bring back the petrol engine for its iconic Compass line-up in an effort to address the fall in sales and react to the shifting market conditions.

Due to non-compliance with BS6 Phase 2 emissions requirements, the business earlier this year withdrew the petrol model. A fresh emphasis on fixing the problem has been brought about by the recent leadership shift at Jeep India.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-101710″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-changes-to-senior-management-personnel-announced-by-tcs-details-here-20230728123059-jeep-750×497.jpg” alt=”” width=”1480″ height=”981″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-changes-to-senior-management-personnel-announced-by-tcs-details-here-20230728123059-jeep-750×497.jpg 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-changes-to-senior-management-personnel-announced-by-tcs-details-here-20230728123059-jeep-1024×678.jpg 1024w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-changes-to-senior-management-personnel-announced-by-tcs-details-here-20230728123059-jeep-768×509.jpg 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-changes-to-senior-management-personnel-announced-by-tcs-details-here-20230728123059-jeep-150×99.jpg 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/theindiaprint.com-changes-to-senior-management-personnel-announced-by-tcs-details-here-20230728123059-jeep.jpg 1200w” sizes=”(max-width: 1480px) 100vw, 1480px” />

The average monthly sales of the Compass have drastically decreased over the last several months, going from a robust 550–650 units to only 250–300 units. The disappearance of the petrol engine, which used to account for over half of all Compass sales, was primarily blamed for this decline in sales.

Due to their powerful torque, diesel engines have long been a favorite in the SUV market. The demand for petrol-powered automobiles has increased due to the shifting market dynamics and long-term uncertainty around diesel engines. Up to 80% of Compass sales occurred in locations like Delhi-NCR, where diesel car ownership is only permitted for ten years.

Even the sales of the diesel-only Meridian model haven’t picked up, highlighting the necessity for a petrol engine in the lineup to satisfy consumer preferences and broaden the range of options. Aditya Jairaj’s appointment as the new leader of Jeep India has refocused the organization’s efforts to reclaim its position in the Indian market.

Jeep India has granted the go-ahead to the introduction of a new 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine in the nation, addressing the prior setback brought on by the termination of the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine. The launch date will likely be delayed until approximately 2025 as a result of the engine calibration, validation, and homologation procedures, which are anticipated to take between 18 to 24 months. It’s unclear if the gasoline engine will be offered in the current Compass model or saved for the 2026 release of the impending next-generation Compass.

The 2018 Jeep Renegade introduced a new 1.3-liter turbo-petrol engine that has two power ratings: 129 horsepower with a 6-speed manual transmission and 149 horsepower with a 6-speed DCT gearbox, both with front-wheel drive. Since the mid-lifecycle redesign in 2020, other international countries where the Compass is marketed have already welcomed this more efficient turbo-petrol engine, supporting the launch of this engine in India.

Jeep’s chances in India may be further improved by the probable addition of the turbo-petrol engine, which would also aid the company in realizing scale economies. In line with Jeep’s Melfi facility in Italy, where the 1.3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine serves as the Compass’ export foundation, export numbers may also increase.

Jeep India hasn’t formally commented on these events, but Aditya Jairaj suggested that gasoline may make a return while highlighting the company’s customer-centric philosophy. Jeep India promises to move quickly and aggressively to close the critical gap in its portfolio as the market requires.

Injecting enthusiasm back into the brand and paving the way for a great comeback in the Indian automotive scene, the reintroduction of the petrol engine to the Compass range is expected to be a game-changer.
