Yashasvi Jaiswal scores a century in her first match against the West Indies to become the first Indian cricketer to do it in 91 years

Yashasvi Jaiswal scores his first Test century on his debut, making history by being the first Indian opener to get a century on their first outing abroad. Many greats came and went before Jaiswal, but the 21-year-old became the first opener to ever accomplish the famous accomplishment. On their Test debuts, three Indian openers each made a century, but none of them did so abroad.

On Day 2 of the current first Test between India and the West Indies at Windsor Park in Dominica, Jaiswal surpassed the milestone as he made his Test century in his debut outing.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-75744″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-yashasvi-jaiswal-scores-a-century-in-her-first-match-against-the-west-indies-to-become-the-first-indian-cricketer-to-do-it-in-91-years-download-2023-07-14t170431.965.jpg” alt=”” width=”1411″ height=”790″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-yashasvi-jaiswal-scores-a-century-in-her-first-match-against-the-west-indies-to-become-the-first-indian-cricketer-to-do-it-in-91-years-download-2023-07-14t170431.965.jpg 300w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-yashasvi-jaiswal-scores-a-century-in-her-first-match-against-the-west-indies-to-become-the-first-indian-cricketer-to-do-it-in-91-years-download-2023-07-14t170431.965-150×84.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1411px) 100vw, 1411px” />

The young player took 215 balls to get his century after playing a tough innings. He then reveled in joy, pulling off his helmet and soaking up all the congratulations from the locker room as well as that huge embrace from skipper Rohit Sharma.

The Mumbai batsman became the third designated opener and only the 17th Indian to record a century in their Test debut. But he is the first Indian to surpass the three-figure threshold on foreign land, shattering a 91-year record that no Indian has been able to accomplish.

Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw both started their Test careers with centuries, but they did it in India, at Mohali and Rajkot, unlike Yashasvi, who did so against Australia and the West Indies, respectively.

Jaiswal is just the fifth Indian player overall to make a century in their Test debut; Abbas Ali Baig was the first to do so back in 1959. Since then, this historic accomplishment has also been accomplished by Surinder Amarnath, Pravin Amre, Virender Sehwag, and Sourav Ganguly.

Jaiswal, who is 21 years old and 196 days, is also the fourth-youngest Indian player to achieve a Test century, after Shaw, who is the third-youngest, Abbas Ali Baig, and Gundappa Viswanath, who are older.
